CASA Voices: Making a Difference
Kathy Cothran has been a CASA for just a year and a half. In that time she has been the driving force behind insuring that a young brother and sister were both in the best place possible for them to thrive. Within less than a month of receiving her appointment order for “Chase” and “Susan” Kathy was called to testify in court. Most of our CASAs who have been with us for many years have never had to testify. However, Kathy was solid under pressure. Her testimony was critical as she was the person in the courtroom who had the most pertinent information about what was happening to these siblings.
With their mother deceased and father in prison these children needed stability and needed to grow the bond between them. Yet their special needs and behaviors would make it difficult for them to be placed together and each still have their individual best interests met. Fortunately, with Kathy’s strong advocacy, they were placed in separate homes with caregivers who are committed to both children, building and maintaining the sibling bond and who live very close to each other. These children now have four parents (five counting Kathy who has also bonded with the families!).
Kathy also goes above and beyond her strong advocacy for the children to whom she is appointed. This spring she spearheaded an Easter Egg party/hunt where 75 children in foster care had a great time hunting eggs and each child went home with a personalized Easter basket, a goody bag from Farm Bureau, a picture with the Easter Bunny AND a new Easter outfit!
Our program, and more importantly the children we serve, are very fortunate to have Kathy Cothran speaking up for them!
